Dan Meyer is calling for the retirement of the hashtag #MTBoS. He’s suggesting—and using—#iteachmath or #iteachmaths instead.
I get it. I get that #iteachmath clearly means I teach math. I get that #MTBoS could look like a random string of letters to someone new. I get that Dan’s intention is simply to make the math community more inviting and inclusive. After all, Dan was one of the first math bloggers who helped transform my teaching, and he continues to challenge and inspire my craft. I’m truly grateful for Dan’s work.
What I don’t get is when people say that #MTBoS is exclusive, alienating, or cliquish.
That kind of statement actually hurts my feelings—like someone just insulted my kids without ever meeting them. I feel hurt and insulted because the #MTBoS that I’ve been lucky to be a part of, and the people within it, are anything but exclusive or unwelcoming.
I know the enormous amount of TIME, WORK, and LOVE that has been poured into building #MTBoS into what it is today.
