Most of my 6th graders struggled with this handout today. Only 4 out of 36 students scored 8 out of 8. I didn’t offer any help aside from reading the instructions aloud and reminding them that for each operation, the two numbers had to be different.
I retyped this task from the Noyce Foundation.
If you teach 6th grade math—or know someone who does—I’d love to hear how your students do with this. (Now I’m also wondering how 7th and 8th graders might fare.)
I’m feeling disheartened and ineffective with this group of 37 kids. If I squint really hard, I might see a few tiny specks of mathematical growth.
This teaching thing is tough.
